A full plate for HR
By Charles Prince
As our current state of economic angst deepens, the
issues confronting HR increase and become more complex.
As an example, a recent Wall Street Journal Article (2/9/09)
focused on the approach to training by many companies at the present
time.
Some of the frills allotted to training programs
have been cut back, but there is a continuing
strategic emphasis on leadership
development. It is a key
necessity for HR to be able to identify and ensure the talent that will
be the managerial lifeblood for the organization’s future.
Another area that we’ve alluded to previously is
compensation. In a time when
layoffs are taking place and profitability is down, how do you structure
your system to retain people you don’t want to lose?
In Executive Compensation, what advisory role can HR play to help
management and board of directors cope with possible government
strictures and shareholder protests?
Alongside of compensation is the issue of benefits,
particularly in the Medical area.
Beside the usual cost containment efforts, there may be a whole
new approach in the near future, fostered by stronger government
intervention.
Speaking of government, another potential item on
the table is the drive to Make Unionization easier by having employers
simply sign cards and eliminating the need for direct elections.
This may cause many hours of agita for the folks in HR.
In essence, the demands placed upon HR continue to
grow, making it vital that your company is meeting those demands with
the best possible HR professionals.
We can help you find those individuals.
